The "...Dave, I remember a lot of those videos. The "Where's Steve?" episode that took the cake, though, was the time you used one to introduce a guest speaker, Rice Brooks, I think. My wife and I were on the usher team on Saturday nights, and that video got the crowd so absorbed they forgot to pass the offering bags! We lost them for a while. Never had that happen before! (That was the video where you found Steve sick in bed, made him a shake that included stuff from their fridge, a can of Coke, and a White Castle from your jacket pocket. Steve was wired--for a few minutes, then passed out. Then you came back on stage, saying, "Aw, anybody can do this--Hey, Rice! You wanna preach tonight?" The poor guy was so flustered he had an awful time getting into his message...I'm sure he had never in his life been introduced like that! It was even funnier than the time at a Hosanna service the night before Thanksgiving, Robbie Reider and Allan Fuller did a holiday parody of "I Give Thanks" re-written for the turkey, and Robbie's sister Katie was supposed to sing next--she came out on stage laughing so hard yet so mad at her brother for it...took her a while to get composed, too.

But with all the fun, I saw something that resulted from it: you and Steve and the rest kept the pedestals from being built, kept yourselves human, and avoided at least some of the traps too many church leaders (even in small congregations) fall into. I remember being in a small group leaders' training session, when Hans Brewer poked his head in the door and fired a super-soaker at the guy leading the class (who pulled one out of the podium and fired back!) But "Thou shalt not take thyself too seriously" is an important lesson. We moved to Indianapolis in '06 to be near my wife's aging parents, so I've been away from VCC for ten years now. I've seen a number of churches that wanted so badly to be mega-churches, and tried to make it happen. I long ago concluded that, while the outreach focus played a major part, another major factor was that the team Father put together at VCC--Steve, you, and the rest--did at least some of the small things well.postmodern redneckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07279009105618761553noreply@blogger.com
